The Al, also known as the Elk, is an Armenian spirit described as half human and half animal, with fiery eyes, long thick hair, the tusks of a boar, and long finger nails made of brass or copper. According to the legend Al was supposedly the first companion made for Adam by God, however since the creature was made from fire and Adam from Earth the two where incompatible. God then created Eve as a new companion for Adam which angered Al and thus why they are said to attack women and steal there babies. It is also said that the Al would steal the mother’s liver and should the liver touch water the women would die, though the mother would die without a liver anyway.

The Al is thought to prefer damp places like stables and wet corners of houses. It is said to be unable to touch iron and sticking a needle into the garment of an Al will render it unable to do evil. In this state, it is usually made into a servant as it cannot remove the needle on its own. To protect themselves expecting mother would keep a sword or knife at the bedside to help ward of the Al.

According to Afghan mythology the Al are young women with floating hair and very long talon like nails often seen feeding upon human corpses.
