The volcanically active Lake Khaiyr is located in the isolated Yanski area of Yakutsk, in eastern Siberia and is home to a creature which has become known as the Khaiyr Beast. It was fist sighted during an expedition to this lonely region in search of rare mineral deposits. One morning, Mr. Gladkika, a renowned Russian mineralogist, woke early in order to enjoy the solitude and untouched splendor of the remote area. He walked down to the lakes edge for a better view of the sunrise when he came face to face with a jet black, long necked, small headed animal that emerged from the water and began to feed on the long grass sprouting from the shoreline.

Upon seeing this creature Gladkika ran back to camp alerting his team members of the creature and grabbing his rifle. The group of mean returned to the lake rifles in hand, however what ever the creature was had already slipped back into the water leaving nothing more than a large impression in the grass. Gladkika was mocked by his team members until several days later when the expedition chef, along with two of his assistants, claimed that they too had seen the creature as it surfaced in the center of the lake. The men described the same black, long necked creature as Gladkika only their accounts included the appearance of a distinct dorsal fin.

Being scientists the group could not rest until they figured out just what it was that they saw, after much debate the group concluded that that they had seen was an ichthyosaur, a species of prehistoric reptile thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago. Modern researchers have concluded that the group of men where mistaken as their own description does not match what an ichthyosaur looked like, they continued by concluding that what they had actually seen, based on the descriptions, may have been a plesiosaur, another prehistoric reptile thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago.

Skeptics are quick to dismiss sightings of the creature in Lake Khaiyr as an illusion created when sub aquatic tremors, caused by the active volcano the lake sits atop, release a rush of boiling water to the surface, resulting in a massive disturbance. Although this may explain some eyewitness reports it does not explain Gladkika’s close range sighting of a large grazing creature. Due to the remoteness of the location and the fear of volcanic activity Lake Khaiyr is rarely visited by tourists or scientists and thus sightings are very few and we may never know what lurks in its deep waters.

The Evidence
No physical evidence has been discovered to date that would suggest the existence of the Khaiyr Beast.

The Sightings
Although the date of Mr. Gladkika’s sighting could not be determined at this time it is the first known documented sighting of the Khaiyr Beast.

Two days after Gladkika’s original sightings, his expedition chef and two of his associates witnessed the Khaiyr Beast surface in the middle of the lake.
